Is there any fiber called 'Bare fiber'?

I have heard that some of my colleagues using the term ‘bare fiber’, such as;
‘We asked for bare fiber’
‘There is a stock of 150 km bare fiber’
‘Bare fiber diameter is 250 microns’

I asked some of them, what do they mean by bare fiber? It seems, they imply 250-micron uncolored fiber by ‘bare fiber’.

I am not convinced. What do you think a bare fiber is?

The meaning changes and it depends how do you interpret the term and from which point you talk.

I mean, if you are in a manufacturing plant that produces optical fibers (drawing tower), the bare fiber is the one they get before going to the coating process. On the other hand, if you are in a cable factory, exactly in front of the loose tube manufacturing machine, then you may call the natural fiber as bare fiber. It is bare for them compared to the other colored fibers. Operators of coloring machine also often you this term ‘bare fiber’ for uncolored fiber.

    Do you know any other area other technologies than an optical fiber or cable factory where the term ‘bare fiber’ is used?

Bare optical fibers are produced in the drawing tower before coating. They are brittle and therefore care should be taken not to damage them while handling. Bare optical fibers are used for experiments. Commercial optical fibers are coated so that they can be wound on reels and deliver by ships, air or land.

The term ‘bear fiber’ in an optical fiber factory indicates 125micron uncoated fiber

    Thanks Fiber.

As the term indicates, ‘bare’ means naked or in the optical fiber manufacturing process, ‘Uncoated’. So, bare fiber means the glass or plastic fiber that has a core and clad region without the outer coatings.

The diameter of bare fiber used for telecommunication applications could be 125 microns. So, as for me, bare fiber is not the one having a diameter of 250 micrometers. 250 microns fiber shall be ‘Natural fiber’.

    I see. So, 250-micron uncoated fiber is not bare fiber.
